“Ripple” by Julia Thomsen and Yujin Baek

There is something deeply rewarding about hearing classical sensibilities carried into a contemporary setting without losing the intimacy that makes the piano such an expressive instrument. “Ripple”, the new piece from Julia Thomsen featuring Yujin Baek, achieves precisely that, unfolding with patience, elegance and a wonderful understanding of space.

The opening is beautifully restrained. Thomsen allows the piano to speak in delicate phrases, each note given enough room to resonate before the next arrives. There is an almost impressionistic quality to these early moments; rather than presenting an obvious melody and immediately developing it, “Ripple” seems to reveal itself gradually, as though the composition is being discovered in real time.

Yujin Baek’s contribution is particularly sympathetic to this approach. Nothing feels imposed upon the piece. Instead, the playing becomes part of its natural movement, complementing Thomsen’s writing with a sensitivity that feels closer to musical conversation than accompaniment. It is this interplay that gives “Ripple” much of its character. The performers understand when to speak and, just as importantly, when to leave silence alone.

As the composition progresses, its neoclassical foundations begin to open into something more cinematic. Synths and ambient textures gather almost imperceptibly around the piano, expanding the soundscape without obscuring the acoustic detail at its centre. The dynamic development is handled with admirable restraint. There is no unnecessary rush towards a grand climax; intensity arrives through accumulation, with subtle changes in texture and weight doing much of the work.

For a classical listener, that restraint is perhaps the most appealing aspect of “Ripple”. Thomsen and Baek recognise that emotional depth does not require excess. Even as the piece reaches its fullest moments, there remains a softness to the performance, a sense that every note has been considered and nothing has been included simply for effect.

The title proves wonderfully appropriate. Like ripples travelling across still water, the smallest musical gestures gradually spread outwards, transforming something intimate into something unexpectedly expansive.
